Madhushala Senaratne

Bio

Dr Madhushala Senaratne is a writer, lecturer and researcher specialising in humanitarian communication, media and international development, and gender and humanitarianism. She holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies and has previously worked as a journalist and with the United Nations Development Programme. Her work examines how language and storytelling shape understandings of people and experiences, with a particular interest in how stories are framed, whose voices are heard, and the ethics of representation. She is also interested in how poetry and fiction can offer alternative ways to engage with everyday challenges and wider issues of social justice. A mother of two boys, she uses poetry to explore the complexities, contradictions and vulnerabilities of motherhood, while also bringing these lived experiences into dialogue with theoretical concerns on motherhood. She is the author of MotherSelf, a poetry pamphlet exploring motherhood and identity.
