Abstract

In the Middle Ages, a feminine community, the Beguines, rose as cultural agents in a Europe dominated by the Church and the State. The Beguines were not nuns but mostly widows from the Crusades and single women. These women were religious and lived with compassion and dedication to those in need, driven by a motherly instinct. Discredited and accused of heresy by the persecutory eyes of the Inquisition, many Beguines faced execution, such as the mystical writer Marguerite Porete, for the teachings of her manuscript The Mirror of Simple Souls. The censored and forgotten Beguines’ mystical books, humanitarian work, and teachings have lately resurfaced.
